What the lots look like
The four stores average 4.4 stars, but the review counts tell you more than the average does. Virginia RV Sales has 25 reviews and a perfect 5.0, a small lot where you can probably talk to the person who actually knows each unit. General RV Center and McGeorge's RV, a Camping World company, carry 1,711 and 2,758 reviews respectively, so expect a bigger operation with more paperwork and more salespeople. Commonwealth RV sits in the middle with 196 reviews at 4.4 stars. Every lot here sells both motorhomes and travel trailers, which is unusual for a town this size.
Matching the store to your trip
If you want a used motorhome and a lot of choice, the big stores are the safer bet simply because of volume. If you are hunting a specific travel trailer and want a slower conversation, start with the smaller lot. Commonwealth RV also handles boats and aircraft, which suggests a service department that works on more than RVs, worth a look if you plan to keep the rig for years. Call ahead and ask what used units are actually on the ground. Listings go stale fast, and a two-hour drive to find an empty space is a bad afternoon.
Buying used without the surprises
Get a pre-purchase inspection from an independent RV tech before you sign, even at a five-star lot. Roofs, seals, and slide mechanisms are where money hides. Ask for the maintenance records and check the tire date codes, since tires age out before they wear out. At delivery, do the walk-through with your phone recording and test every system with water and power hooked up. Get financing pre-approval from your own bank first so the dealer's number has something to beat. Off-season shopping tends to bring softer pricing, and Ashland's proximity to I-95 means inventory turns over regularly.
